Leap into learning with the stunning LeapPad interactive learning system from LeapFrog, and watch young readers get to grips with reading without even noticing the work. Even the most reluctant of readers will find this system irresistible. The LeapPad includes a nifty software system that combines a "magic" pen with an interactive book designed to help children spell, follow a story and improve their vocabulary and concentration.
Users simply place the book onto the pad, take up the pen and follow the story. They listen to the story being read aloud first, then go over the words again with the pen, choosing whether to say the words, spell them or sound them phonetically. Each element encourages the child to join in, helping to develop an understanding of the sounds each word makes and how the words fit to form a sentence, and then a story. The real fun starts when the pen touches one of the characters: the slightest touch makes them speak and giggle along, adding a further dimension.
Included in the LeapPad reading scheme are: an excerpt from Richard Scarry's Best Word Book Ever, a good starting-point for vocabulary development ; a Winnie the Pooh story, especially designed to build confidence and story-reading skills in young readers; a page dedicated to different parts of the body, where the child is encouraged to identify and then spell out the words; an impressive section about musical instruments and an introduction to foreign languages which involves choosing an everyday activity then choosing to hear the words in French, Spanish, German or Japanese.
You don't have to understand how the technology works; all you need to know is that this is one of the most impressive, yet simplest, reading and learning system you are ever likely to come across, combining some of the most basic elements of learning with some of the most complex. But the real strength of this product is that it is fun. Children will find the interactivity irresistible, and will enjoy hearing sounds and playing the games that are, without them even noticing it, encouraging them to learn some of the most important skills on the road to adulthood. Requires 4 x AA batteries (not included). Ages 4 and up. --Susan Harrison
Children can practise their reading skills with interactive books such as Pooh Gets Stuck, Bounce Tigger Bounce, Best Little Word Book Ever and Things To Know.

Disney Princess Stories is part of LeapFrog's range of interactive books. designed to be used with their LeapPad Learning System. The pack contains a spiral-bound book and a cartridge. Simply slot both the book and the cartridge into the appropriate areas on the LeapPad and you're ready to start. This particular title is recommended for children at the "LeapStart" pre-reading stage of the LeapPad library, which is children up to five years old.
Little girls will love to join the tales, and get swept away by the magic of the Disney Princesses. They can help a friend with Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, dress up and dance the night away with enchanting Cinderella, or the more adventurous will love to take the plunge and join the dramatic undersea adventure with Ariel. Music and song will encourage pre-schoolers through the book as the magic of Disney really comes to life.
Disney Princess fans will be comfortable with the bold, bright images that perfectly replicate the characters they know so well from film and stories. The book is superbly produced. The LeapPad comes with a special touch-sensitive pen--follow the story by using it to touch the words on the page. Parents will love the fact that as children read on, using the "magic pen", they will build basic skills: story comprehension, vocabulary, character dialogue, character comprehension, and recognise initial sounds and letters.
Disney Princesses will entertain pre-school children, (particularly little girls) and is designed, with the LeapPad, go build reading confidence. --Susan Naylor

My First LeapPad is a fun, interactive way to introduce first learning concepts to pre-school children and is aimed at those who are not old enough to appreciate the LeapPad Interactive Reading System.Like the award-winning LeapPad before it, My First LeapPad is based around a software system that combines a "magic" pen with interactive books, in this case aimed at helping children recognise shapes, numbers, colours and first letters and words. The concept is simple enough: clip the "Leap's Big Day" book (included) on top of the First LeapPad, insert the cartridge into the station on its side, and press the green "Go" button. Each page has a different activity: choose from "Counting Farm", "Parts of the Body", "Count and Sing Express" and many, many more.
Visually exciting and very colourful, the illustrations are all self-contained, each centred around a situation that helps reinforce one or other first learning skill. For example, in "Parts of the Body", basic body parts are labelled, and if you press the "game" button, you are invited to press parts of the body while singing along to "Heads, Shoulders, Knees and Toes". You can even choose a different body part for the song, and change the title! In "Leap Hopped on a Train", relatives are tested, as readers are asked to point with the magic pen to the item "under Leap's arm" or the person "standing next to Tad", and so on. When you get to the end, simply turn the book around, and instead of single exercises, you can follow a series of scenarios that together make a full story.
The music is lively, and volume is adjustable. The First LeapPad is bold, chunky and wipe-clean, and all wiring and batteries are well hidden behind screwed-down casing. A handy handle is just right for little fingers, and it even gives you a warning when your batteries are running out.
The "Leap's Big Day" book is also sturdy, made out of durable, wipe-clean cardboard and strong plastic binding. Though the unit is technologically quite complex, the learning principles behind My First LeapPad are traditionally simple, based on repetition, reinforcement and good old-fashioned fun! Parents will probably need to spend time helping and encouraging youngsters as they get to grips with the unit, and the only thing to remember is to press the green "Go" button each time you turn a page.
Recent research has shown that the younger a child is exposed to letters and numbers, the earlier they will begin to learn how to count and write. My First LeapPad is undoubtedly a learning aid that will foster this progression and give your children a helping hand as they set out to learn. The only additional thing you will need is a backpack or bag to store the books, unit and cartridges safely together. --Susan Naylor
Aimed at pre-readers, the manufacturers recommend My First LeapPad for children aged 3 years and above. Requires 4 x AA batteries (not supplied).
